Hello everyone hope your all keeping well & pain free x Ive had RA for nearly 2 years this may, my hands are so so painful + ankles knees. ive just been told ive got a overactive thyroid i was just wondering as anyone else had this, the consultant said it could be linked to your RA because they are both autoimmune, i would be ever so grateful with any fee back. Many thanks.

Hi Graham, I am also keen to know more about auto immune diseases and their link with one another. Fortunately, I only have R.A., which can be genetic I understand, as my maternal grandmother had it before me. In my close family there are others with automine type diseases. My 9 yr old grandson has chronic atopic eczema which he developed soon after birth, and my nephew has recently been diagnosed with chrons disease which are both autoimmune disorders, I also have two sisters with R.A., but theirs is much less agressive. I had eczema as a child, and although I do not have it now, I still have to grease my skin daily because it is so dry. I am not being much help to you with your problem, but feel there is probably some sort of link and would like to know more. I'll google auto immune diseases and see what comes up.
Hope you find out more, keep us in touch, Zena x.

Hi Graham

I was diagnosed with RA three years ago, and I have an underactive thyroid. I also have an aunty and an uncle, both on my dads side, with RA.

Regards

I had an operation to remove part of my thyroid gland over twenty years ago. I was diagnosed with RA two and a half years ago, my mother and maternal grandmother both had RA, which they called "rheumatics" and were given aspirin and wintergreen ointment to rub into affected joints. Thank goodness we've improved in that at least!!
I have no idea if the two are linked, hadn't even thought about it to be honest, but very interested to know
I was just told that my thyroid was making too much hormone, which caused a swelling on my neck, and it needed to be removed, after a few tests that they did

Hi I have had an under active thyroid for 7 years and was diagnosed with RA 2 years ago. I think it is to do with a gene and family history as my sister has RA but no thyroid problem and my mum is a diabetic with no RA and no thyroid problem.

Definately in my opinion a rogue gene

Smile Hi Graham

I was diagnosed with graves/over active thyroid when I was 21 yrs old.*forgot to add in: was on carbimizole for 6 months - didn't do any change with blood tests - then had operation to remove a 7th off each side.*

All fine till 10 yrs ago - thyroid awoke and I needed radio active iodine to kill off any over active. Because they only operate the once for thryriod.

Now I take thyroxine each daySad

Thyroid & arthritis are auto amun chronic illnesses.

We are ALL special in our own little waysBigGrin LOL

Hi Graham

Sorry I'm a little late to respond, but I have suffered with an under active thyroid for 17 years and was then diagnosed with RA in March 2009.

Looking at the replies there is a link there isn't there.

Take Care
Lou

Hi Graham
I was diagnosed with RA ten years ago. 14 months ago I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid. My gp also said it was probably related to the RA as they're both auto-immune diseases. I had radio-iodine treatment almost immediately (and a cancelled operation!) and now have to take thyroxine daily, like Jane. Have they suggested treatment for you?
